Pastel Hell is the name I gave to a world I made up in my head. Pastel Hell only refers to one such location in the world, but I like the sound of it enough that I like to use it as a collective term. It features a bunch of funny monster-ish girls, mostly demons, and some non-monster ones too. There are guys too, but most of them are not relevant.
Pastel Hell was born from at least two inciting incidents. One was in 2013 when I thought about the idea of yaoi of Ornstein and Smough from Dark Souls. Then I thought about it as demon girls that would later become Jo and Amelia. The second incident was the following year when I drew a shit MS Paint drawing of two pastel goth-adjacent girls captioned "WELLCOME TO PASTEL HELL, FUCKER." No one liked it except for my friend Chenna. Riffing on the pastel goth subculture that was so popular at the time, these two girls would later become Shelley and Mary. Somehow I made the decision to expand upon this idea, incorporate the previous idea into it, and then I started adding new elements such as the heaven characters.
Pastel Hell has been a slow, if steady ongoing project for some years now. I don't know if I will ever do anything particularly significant with it beyond a handful of funny images but stay tuned!
There isn't a whole lot of defined worldbuilding for Pastel Hell, mostly because I made up a lot of it as I went along. But there are still some things that remain consistent.
Pastel Hell is the name given to a region on the surface of the world. It features lush hills and plains covered in pink and green colors of low saturation. There is a fairly large city there which I have not thought of a name for where many live, mostly pastel demons. As the name suggests, the Pastel Goth subculture is wildly popular in the area, and has somehow survived for decades. People in Pastel Hell are particularly concerned with their own personal aesthetic, especially young adults, and are not particularly receptive to people outside of their personal circles. Pastel Hell is surprisingly urbanized, and features many anemities similar to our own.
High above Pastel Hell is, of course, Heaven. Heaven is the name given to any divine establishment located in the sky, high above the clouds. Despite the common belief Heaven is made of clouds, it is actually made of floating land masses. One particularly large landmass is located fairly close to the Pastel Hell city. Heaven is populated by divine beings, mostly angels. Non-divine beings are not allowed to enter Heaven, except under special circumstances. Angels have a society that is built primarily on fulfilling their duties to God, and not much else. A lot of technology in Heaven is actually more antiquated than that of Hell, particularly because angels really like to reuse things.
Angels are born appearing similar to humans, but their wings grow in when they become older. When they come of age, angels are given a duty for a number of years to descend to the surface and apprehend those who have sinned, bringing them back to Heaven to face judgement. Usually angels are appointed by an archangel, who then contacts other divine beings further up the hierarchy until they reach those said to be in direct contact with God himself.
Religion in Pastel Hell is more vague than one would think. While angels claim to be doing the work of what they claim is the Judeo-Christian God, none of them have ever seen or made direct contact with him. Most are of devout faith regardless. Most demons on the surface are either atheist or only believe in God because they live in fear of him, or more specifically in fear of facing judgement.
Underground and some ways out east from the city is a place known as Skeleton Hell, characterized by its volcanic pools and having little natural light. Despite the name, Skeleton Hell is populated by about 60% demons and 40% skeletons. Skeleton Hell's towns and cities are known for their old gothic architecture and winding pathways. Much of the architecture was destroyed following a war some years ago (see video below.) Despite what one may think, Skeleton Hell's inhabitants are on average much more friendly to strangers than Pastel Hell's, and they are less concerned about aesthetics. Despite the distance between them, it is surprisingly easy to travel between the two Hells.
Below Skeleton Hell is a place known as Deep Hell, which has no light whatsoever and is always below freezing temperature. There are few natural entrances to this place, and the ones that exist only have gates and warning signs telling others to keep out. No one is known to live permanently inside Deep Hell.
There are a number of other locations I have thought of, such as a coastal town populated by skeletons but I have yet to get around to depicting that, if I ever do. If there's only one thing that's been certain for years, it's that the events of this video are a 100% canon incident that happened at some point in the past:
Shelley Stonewell
Mary's younger sister who she hates very much. Shelley is something of a lethargic individual and prefers to spend her time lazing about, eating precooked meals at inopportune times and playing lots of video games. She's incredibly rude and blunt, especially to her sister, but she might have a soft spot that only a certain someone can discover.
Mary Stonewell
Shelley's older sister who she hates very much. Very much the opposite of Shelley, and wants to distance herself from her sister as much as possible. She has a friendly disposition to strangers, but becomes significantly more maniuplative and passive-aggressive to people she knows better. When not yelling at her sister for failing to clean up after herself, she likes spending time going out and engaging in risky one night stands with dashing individuals in the city.
Joanna
A young woman who lives in Skeleton Hell and a friend of the Stonewell sisters. Joanna, or Jo as some call her, is a very optimistic and charismatic, and it seems impossible to hate her. She is also a bit absent-minded, as she is either unaware of or frequently ignores the sisters' constant fighting. She loves cooking for herself and others, especially making curry. She is transgender and hasn't gotten around to that whole HRT thing yet, but she wants to someday. She loves Amelia very much, and wants to get a bigger place with her someday.
Amelia
Joanna's girlfriend who also lives in Skeleton Hell. Amelia has an overly cautious personality, and likes to avoid conflict whenver possible. She loves her GF but is concerned that she's hanging out with a bad crowd. She is a big fan of music, but doesn't talk about it very much. She works as a security guard at a museum, but despite her 7-foot-tall stature she could probably not bring herself to use force if required. Thankfully no one wants to steal from the Skeleton Hell museum. She lives with family, but wishes she could find a better place to move in with Jo.
Mira
An angel who lives high above Pastel Hell. She met Shelley after mistaking her for a sinner on her judgement list, and the two have remained friends ever since. While seemingly calm and composed, Mira is frequently a nervous wreck and only a hair's breadth away from breaking down at any moment. She tries her best to enact kindness and love regardless. She is enrolled in a university, and plays horn in the school orchestra. Her wings are prosthetic ones made of metal, as her original wings had to be surgically removed after growing in badly. She has spent a lot of time thinking about Shelley ever since she entered her life.
Eleanor
A co-worker of Mira who lives in Heaven. While Angels don't really work together, they do end up communicating when under the same platoon commanded by an archangel. Unfortunately for Mira, Eleanor is a very strange and unpleasant girl, frequently talking over her with inane nonsense that no one wants to hear. She likes to attempt getting out of work, and usually gets away with it due to the lax attitude of her brother.
Gabe
Gabriel, who goes by Gabe since he has the second most common name given to angel boys, is Eleanor's brother and the archangel who her and Mira work under. Despite his intimidating stature, Gabe is relatively willing to accomodate for others, being much nicer than Mira's previous boss. Despite his younger sister frequently causing mischief, the two siblings do care about each other, in sharp contrast to a certain pair of demons on the surface.
